The … Read more A substantial Rogers & Hamilton silverplate ladle, eleven and a half inches long, with a richly modeled Rococo handle. The tip is crowned with a scrolling, shell-edged cartouche, and a second sweep of C-scrolls and acanthus leaves runs down the shoulder of the handle. A small acanthus spray marks the joint where the stem meets the bowl. The maker's name is stamped on the reverse of the stem. Rogers & Hamilton was a Waterbury, Connecticut, silverplate maker organized in 1886 and absorbed into International Silver in 1898.

The oval cartouche at the top of the handle is left plain, ready for a monogram, which makes this a lovely piece to personalize as a gift or to set apart on your own table.

This is a very heavy ladle. It has real heft in the hand and a balanced, confident feel that lightweight modern plate simply does not have. The deep, rounded bowl measures 3.5 inches by 3 inches, generous enough for gravy, cream soups, sauces, or a punch for a small gathering.

Condition: lovingly used, with the soft, even patina of a piece that has been served from and polished for years. The relief detailing on the handle is crisp and well defined. Please see all photographs, which are part of the description.
