A handsome American Late Classical (Empire) chest of drawers, circa 1835–1850, in the pillar-and-scroll form. The drawer fronts are veneered in richly figured, book-matched crotch mahogany. Bold S-scroll supports frame the case, and turned feet carry the back.
The upper tier is a removable backsplash section with two glove-box drawers, which makes the piece work well as a dresser or a vanity. Below is a projecting top drawer over three graduated drawers, all with turned wood knobs and brass keyhole escutcheons. The case sides and top are figured mahogany.
The construction is period-correct throughout: wide hand-planed pine backboards, softwood secondary wood, and nailed backs. The drawers slide smoothly and offer generous storage.
This is a substantial, honest antique with a warm, aged surface.
