The chest takes the characteristic "house" form: a two-slope roof lid set between gabled ends crowned with projecting horn posts, and a plank case raised on extended corner stiles. Every surface is hand-incised with bold geometric ornament, including chevron bands, lattice-filled saltire panels, and a double-arcade frieze. A central concentric-circle rosette sits on the front, a solar motif traditional to the region. Dark pigment rubbed into the grounds sets off the carved lines. The lid has weathered to a soft, dry gray.

The chest is built of hand-worked softwood planks, pegged and nailed, with a deep, roomy interior. It's a sculptural, textural piece that works as a blanket chest, a coffee table, or a statement accent in a modern, rustic, or wabi-sabi interior. See less
