This elaborate Renaissance Revival design features a floral-form candle cup above four female busts, with individually pierced panels depicting figures and flower-filled torchères, all richly molded with foliate detail.

The rich polychrome decoration combines deep cobalt blue, turquoise, cream and gilt accents, creating dramatic contrast across the sculptural surface. The pierced architectural stem rises from a broad circular pedestal base molded with acanthus leaves, completing the highly detailed Renaissance-inspired design.

The underside bears the impressed WEDGWOOD mark, British registration diamond and the circular John Mortlock retailer’s mark. Mortlock was a prominent London retailer of fine china and decorative wares, with premises on Oxford Street. The Cinque Cento design was registered in November 1876, allowing this example to be dated very closely to its period of manufacture.

An exceptional example of Victorian Wedgwood majolica, this highly sculptural candlestick displays beautifully from every angle and is an especially striking piece for a collection of 19th century English ceramics or majolica.
