A breath of raw art and modernity emanates from this large ceramic pitcher by atelier roy, crafted in the vibrant … Read more A breath of raw art and modernity emanates from this large ceramic pitcher by atelier roy, crafted in the vibrant spirit of the 1950s! designed by the french ceramist yvon roy for the montgolfier art workshops in durtal, it is stamped "unique piece – montgolfier." its generous, bulbous body is covered in a deep matte black slip, onto which the ceramist has incised mysterious white silhouettes using sgraffito: stylized figures or abstract plant forms that irresistibly evoke cave paintings and primitive art, so dear to post-war french aesthetics. The neck is adorned with a beautiful frieze of almond-shaped motifs, a delicate signature of a confident hand. Towards the base, fine horizontal incised lines subtly shift the hue from black to gray, adding depth and structure to the whole. A distinctive piece, straddling the line between fine craftsmanship and modernist artistic expression, this imposing pitcher is a striking decorative piece.
