Depicted in a softly lit head-and-shoulders pose, Fitzgerald gazes upward with her characteristic warmth and poise, the image exemplifying the refined studio portraiture associated with the golden age of American jazz. The portrait was issued as a promotional photograph for Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP), the legendary concert series created and produced by impresario Norman Granz, whose tours brought together many of the greatest names in jazz from the 1940s onward.
