Its highly distinctive frame … Read more This exceptionally atmospheric Swedish Grace wall mirror is attributed to Sweden and dates from circa 1930. Its highly distinctive frame is hand-carved from wood and finished in gold. The unusual horseshoe-shaped composition is decorated with sculptural roses and leaves, while the elongated side sections feature an incised geometric lattice pattern. Two stylized flower heads complete the upper ends of the frame. Based on comparisons with Scandinavian decorative arts of the 1920s and 1930s, the restrained ornamentation, robust carving and harmonious combination of classical and geometric elements strongly suggest a Swedish origin. The design beautifully reflects the transition from Swedish Classicism to Scandinavian Art Deco, commonly known as Swedish Grace. The original, generously beveled mirror plate has been preserved. Its naturally aged silvering displays areas of foxing, small dark spots and characteristic traces of time, creating a wonderfully atmospheric reflection. Rather than detracting from the mirror, this authentic patina gives it remarkable depth, warmth and individuality. The mirror remains largely in its original condition. The gilded wooden frame shows age-appropriate wear and minor losses consistent with its age. An older, professionally executed repair is visible on the reverse. from the front, this restoration is only detectable upon very close inspection and does not affect the overall appearance or stability of the mirror.
