An exceptional French Art Deco butcher block dating to the 1920s-1930s, sourced from the historic Chateau de Vendargues in Caissargues, … Read more An exceptional French Art Deco butcher block dating to the 1920s-1930s, sourced from the historic Chateau de Vendargues in Caissargues, near Nimes in Southern France. The property is today known as Chateau Darcy. Impressive in both scale and construction, the table features a massive end-grain butcher block top composed of individually arranged wood blocks, creating a richly textured surface shaped by decades of use. The top is framed by a substantial wooden perimeter with metal corner reinforcements and a raised back rail with additional metal fittings. The architectural base displays strong Art Deco influence, with three substantial supports detailed with fluting, geometric carvings, paneled ends and curved brackets. Two large drawers are incorporated into the front and retain their distinctive faceted metal pulls, complemented by circular metal details along the apron. Following its arrival in New York, the butcher block underwent an extensive restoration. The piece was structurally revised and refinished, with the substantial butcher block top and architectural base carefully restored while preserving the natural variations, marks and character developed through decades of use. The original metal hardware and distinctive architectural details were retained. At nearly 6 1/2 feet long, the butcher block has an impressive sculptural presence and can function as a kitchen island, center table, work table or statement piece.
