There is something particularly special about an antique that still tells us who made it. More than a century after leaving the cabinetmaker’s workshop, this 19th century English pine wardrobe retains its original Thomas and Homan’s cabinet makers plate—a small surviving detail that connects the piece directly to the hands and workshop responsible for its creation.
And it is beautifully made.
The wardrobe has a wonderfully considered simplicity, with the cabinetmaker softening its substantial form through gently rounded edges along both the cornice and base. It is a subtle detail, but one that gives the piece a sense of refinement and demonstrates the thought that went into furniture intended for everyday use. Traditional hand-hewn joinery throughout provides further evidence of its 19th century construction and the craftsmanship behind it.
On the front, a lovely brass closure mechanism provides both function and decoration, its warm, aged surface sitting beautifully against the old pine.
Open the doors and another part of the wardrobe’s history reveals itself. The original interior hooks remain in place, reflecting how a wardrobe of this period would initially have been used. Clothing was commonly hung from hooks rather than from the continuous rails we expect today. At some later point in the wardrobe’s life, a hanging bar was added, adapting the piece as wardrobes—and the way people stored their clothes—evolved.
We particularly love details like this. Rather than freezing the wardrobe at one moment in its history, they show us how a well-made piece of furniture continued to serve successive generations. The original hooks tell us how it began; the later rail tells us that someone valued it enough to adapt it and keep using it.
Today, that combination makes the wardrobe both wonderfully evocative and entirely practical. Its generous enclosed storage works beautifully in a bedroom, guest room, or a home without extensive built-in closets, while the warmth of the old pine gives it the architectural presence of a piece that has belonged to a room for generations.
Hand selected in and imported from England, this 19th century pine wardrobe is a beautiful survivor of traditional English cabinetmaking—from its hand-hewn construction and thoughtful rounded detailing to its old brass closure, original hooks, later hanging rail, and, wonderfully, the Thomas and Homan’s maker’s plate that still tells us where its story began.
The interior depth of the cabinet is 17.25" and the interior height is 56"
