A charming antique handled redware crock found in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and probably made locally in the mid-19th century. The rounded body has a tooled band at the shoulder and an applied strap handle. The lead glaze is a rich, deep brown with lighter, mottled patches, and the interior is glazed a glossy dark brown over the red clay. The base is left unglazed, so you can see the warm red clay body.

Redware like this was made by local potters for everyday use in the kitchen and dairy, and it is simple and well formed. It sits comfortably on a shelf or table, as a utensil holder, or filled with dried flowers or branches. The hand-thrown shape and soft glaze suit folk art collections as well as rustic or organic interiors.
