Catalogue Note
The painting depicts two ponies standing together in a sheltered rural paddock.
Dinky, a chestnut Shetland pony, stands beside Sparky, a skewbald miniature Shetland.
Their contrasting colouring, thick manes and compact forms establish the principal visual interest.
Behind them, a timber field shelter, fencing and mature trees frame the composition.
Green pasture and small yellow flowers create a peaceful foreground, while a distant figure stands near a gate.
The original setting has been identified as a paddock beside the River Worth in Oakworth, near Haworth.
According to the artist's wife, the painting was completed in 2022 from a photograph of ponies belonging to friends of the family.
She identified the background figure as the daughter of the ponies' owner. She also confirmed that Dinky was 40 years old in October 2026 and that Sparky had since died.
These details establish the painting as a personal record of real animals and their Yorkshire countryside surroundings.
