Max Levine is a highly notable mid-century metal sculptor active in the 1970s known specifically for creating abstract, torch-cut bronze, copper, and iron multi-layered wall sculptures with distinct geometric play. He was based in NJ. This particular piece is a 1979 mid-century modern Brutalist nail art wall sculpture featuring torch-cut and welded details, signed by the artist "Maxl". Max Levine.
Brutalist nail art was a massive interior design trend during the late 1960s and 1970s. Artists used manual brazing, oxygen-acetylene torches, and heavy industrial materials—such as masonry nails, railroad spikes, and cut steel—to create highly textured, aggressive geometric grids or starburst layouts. These pieces are often heavily oxidized, torch-blackened, or accented with molten brass and copper highlights to contrast industrial grit with mid-century elegance.
