Carved crown moldings cap both ends of the base, recalling Gustavian dowry chests and rural Swedish traveling trunks.
Old pine takes a chalky antique grey that has been rubbed back along the carving so the relief reads from across the room, while the top is left natural for contrast. Iron fittings finish the trunk illusion. At 55 by 32 inches and 20 inches high, it serves a full-size sofa with ease.
Set it in front of linen slipcovers or worn leather, in rooms that lean French, Swedish, or simply old - it has the presence of an antique without the fragility of one.
