The covers are smooth rather than textured, and the muted gray reads modern against pale wood and white walls. The volumes vary in size through the group, so no two sit at quite the same height in a stack.

Widths run 7 to 10 inches, heights 5 to 7 inches, and each spine measures about an inch. Twelve volumes will fill a full shelf, divide neatly across two, or break into smaller groupings for a console, a bedside table or the corner of a desk where a little visual weight is wanted. Laid flat, three or four make a steady plinth for a lamp or a small bronze.

The set does quiet work in a modern or transitional room, softening open shelving that would otherwise look under-dressed. Gray is the easy choice here, since it sits happily with black metal, oak and linen alike and never pulls attention away from the objects placed beside it. Run a few in a bookcase, keep a short stack on a coffee table, and the palette holds together from room to room.
