It is classic Louis XVI structure with a French farmhouse surface, and the wear is heavy enough to read from across the room. The square back is the giveaway, plainer and more upright than the oval medallion of the same period.

The cane keeps the chair visually light and the dining room airy, while the seat is flax fabric over comfortable padding. Fluted, tapered legs carry the period signature down to the floor. Each chair stands 40 inches at the back, tall enough to give a long table some presence without blocking the view across a room when every seat has been pushed in.

Whitewash and flax belong in rooms built on pale surfaces: a plaster dining room, a kitchen with an old plank table, a garden room with plenty of light. The distressed finish means they take normal family use without ever looking damaged. Use a set around the table, or two at a console or a desk where a French shape is wanted in small measure.
