Marsha Rogow Straus Nov. 7, 1944 - Mar. 24, 2008 Resident of Walnut Creek Beloved wife of Art Straus, devoted sister of Gail Jurman and loving sister-in-law to Eddie Jurman of New York, she was the caring aunt of Rory, David, and Mark Jurman of New York and Florida. She was also the cherished sister-in-law to Bernice and Henry Schlifka of Augusta, Georgia, and the beloved aunt to Nathan, Alan, and Steven Jolles of Augusta, Georgia. Marsha was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 7, 1944. She graduated from Brooklyn's Lafayette High School in 1962 and later obtained a B.S. degree in Psychology, graduating with honors from Manhattan's Hunter College in 1974, after attending night school. In 1978 Marsha and her husband moved to the SF Bay Area after two years of living in Florida. Marsha found her calling in teaching, at first in pre-school, and later in English as A Second Language (ESL) to refugees, in Adult Education classes where she worked for 17 years, touching many lives. She had ESL students from all over the world, including the former Soviet Union, Poland, (a number of members of the Solidarity Union), many eastern European countries, Italy, and Latin America. Many of her students had been highly educated professionals in their native countries and quite a few had been held as political prisoners in Communist countries. In 1999, Marsha retired from teaching to devote full time to her passion of pursuing her art work in various media, including painting and sculpturing. Among her recent achievements and awards for her art work, was a two-woman show in Pittsburg, California in 2001 with her late beloved friend, Ann Henry of Concord. She also had one of her pieces on display at the famed Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, also in 2001. She had a rare gift for connecting with so many people from all walks of life. It's been said many times that Marsha could meet someone for the first time and within five minutes they would be telling her their life story.
