The medallion was produced for Loyal Griffin Lodge No. 751 and is richly decorated with colourful enamel work, creating a striking contrast against the warm silver-gilt surface. The combination of symbolic imagery, enamel decoration and precious metal construction gives the piece considerable ceremonial and historical character. Inscribed with the words “Justice, Truth, Philanthropy,” the medallion reflects the principles and fraternal traditions associated with the lodge. The piece bears full London hallmarks for 1945 together with the maker’s mark of Louis Simpson, a specialist manufacturer of Masonic and Buffalo jewels operating from York Road, King’s Cross, London. Dating from the final year of the Second World War, the medallion is an interesting example of mid-20th-century British fraternal regalia and presentation silver.
