This is a 1928 original French fashion pochoir from the collection of Les Idees Nouvelles de la Mode that featured the latest trends of haute couture designs from the 1920s. Pochoirs were done on calque (tissue paper). Pochoir was a labor-intensive stencil printing technique that was popular in Paris in the Art Deco period. Once the stencil was created, the “colorists” applied color pigments by hand and in layered applications to create vivid accurately colored images. The manual aspect of pochoir was its most valuable attribute while at the same time became one of its greatest failures. It was both labor intensive and time consuming, making it an expensive and slow process of printmaking. As a result, this technique was short lived and was replaced by modern lithography techniques. Thus, pochoirs have become rare and highly collectible with the passage of time.
This pochoir features summer fashion trends of 1928. The sunny yellow, crisp white and Mediterranean blue speak to summer. The finely pleated sun dress has a long scarf-like sash at the waist. The model carries a coordinating parasol with a yellow center scarf detail. Her wide rim sun hat with Art Deco geometric styling also has a sunny yellow sash. Elbow length white gloves are finished with a hankerchief, again in yellow. The handbag features similar Deco elements. Together, these accessories compliment the chic fashion trends of the season. This pochoir makes for wonderful wall decor, especially for the fashionista who loves the beach. It is in pristine condition with strong color and wonderful detailing. Note that the crease-like lines in the tissue paper are from the drying of the color inks. This is very common in pochoirs as is the light spotting of adhesives used to attach the calque to its thick stock paper. This image is RARE..
