This is a 1924 original French fashion pochoir from the collection of Les Idees Nouvelles de la Mode that featured the latest trends of haute couture designs from the 1920s. Pochoirs were done on calque (tissue paper). Pochoir was a labor-intensive stencil printing technique that was popular in Paris in the Art Deco period. Once the stencil was created, the “colorists” applied color pigments by hand and in layered applications to create vivid accurately colored images. The manual aspect of pochoir was its most valuable attribute while at the same time became one of its greatest failures. It was both labor intensive and time consuming, making it an expensive and slow process of printmaking. As a result, this technique was short lived and was replaced by modern lithography techniques. Thus, pochoirs have become rare and highly collectible with the passage of time.
This pochoir features couture fashion accessories from 1924. The collection of moderne accessories of the Art period include an array of fashionable designs. The open fan is an example of the newly coveted Japanese influences on the decorative arts in Paris. The geometric moderne patterns in the handbags, gloves, and shoes are classic Art Deco elements. The luxurios evening bags and gloves with their wide cuffs are new fashionable trends of the 1920s. Note, too, the use of metallic silver ink detailing in the gloves, hat, purses, shoes, etc.. Metallic inks are specific to the Art Deco period; they beautifully highlight interest and detailing in the designs. This pochoir is an exoctic collection of fashion accessoeies worn by the most chic Parisian women of the time. Together, these accessories compliment the chic fashion trends of the season. This pochoir makes for wonderful wall decor, especially for today's fashionista or vintage clothing collector. It is in pristine condition with strong color and wonderful detailing. Note that the creaselike lines in the tissue paper are from the drying of the color inks. This is very common in pochoirs as is the light spot of adhesive of the calque to the attached thick stock paper. This image is RARE..
