Designed as a complementary pair, the panels likely originally flanked a doorway or architectural opening, forming a traditional vertical couplet.

Each long, gently convex wooden panel displays a different sequence of carved Chinese characters, their worn gold-colored surfaces outlined in dark pigment for greater definition. Carved terminals at the top and bottom incorporate scrolling decorative motifs, giving the otherwise slender forms a strong architectural presence.

The backs remain unfinished, reflecting their original placement against a structural surface. Standing 82 inches tall, the panels make a dramatic vertical statement while requiring relatively little wall width. They could be installed together on either side of a doorway, displayed as independent wall sculptures or leaned decoratively in an entry hall or living space. Their richly aged red and gold surfaces, expressive calligraphy and visible history would bring considerable character to a traditional or eclectic interior. See less
