The continuous architectural composition extends across all four hinged panels, creating an impressive sense of symmetry, depth and theatrical perspective.

The surface is worked in low relief, giving physical definition to the building’s columns, windows, balustrades and ornament. Painted sections in pale blue, coral red, black and cream punctuate the predominantly bronze, gold and softly silvered palette. Black architectural accents sharpen the composition, while stylized winged creatures, urns, flowering shrubs and a suspended lantern introduce an imaginative decorative quality.

Although made in China, the screen draws upon European classical and Renaissance-inspired architecture rather than traditional Asian imagery. Its elaborate metallic surface and boldly staged composition give it a distinctly Hollywood Regency character.

At 84 inches high and 80 inches wide when fully extended, the screen has considerable decorative presence. It could serve as a room divider, a freestanding architectural feature or an expansive backdrop behind furniture. See less
