The rectangular chest retains a richly aged red painted surface with decorative figural panels on the front, surrounded by floral and ornamental motifs. Layers of worn pigment, exposed wood, and darkened patina give the piece wonderful depth and character, while the raised lower molding and carved apron add architectural detail.

Traditionally, wedding boxes and chests were used to hold clothing, textiles, and personal possessions associated with marriage and the household. Today, this piece makes a distinctive decorative accent while providing useful storage. Its compact proportions work beautifully on a console, low table, or cabinet, or displayed on its own as a piece of Chinese folk art. The time-worn red paint and narrative decoration bring warmth and history to Santa Fe, boho chic, eclectic, or contemporary interiors.
