A charming pair of 19th-century Continental European oil paintings depicting two of the traditional Labors of the Months: the summer grain harvest and the autumn grape harvest. One composition portrays agricultural workers cutting and gathering wheat beneath a blue summer sky, while its companion captures the autumn vintage, with figures collecting grapes and working around traditional wooden wine vats. Richly colored and beautifully detailed, the paintings reflect the pastoral genre traditions of Continental Europe, with French and Italian influences.
Both paintings are presented in matching antique giltwood frames with broad, gently sloping profiles and delicate ornamental inner borders. The frames retain a warm, timeworn patina that complements the paintings' muted landscapes and expressive figures. Particularly interesting are the original labels on the reverse from Casa Mazarini, Boulevard de Garavan, France, bearing consecutive inventory numbers 85 and 86, indicating that the paintings were catalogued together. Additional labels from the Parisian shipping firm France Export document a later chapter in their European history.
An appealing addition to an English country house, French country kitchen, traditional dining room, or collected gallery wall, these intimate paintings offer a lovely balance of seasonal storytelling and Old World character. Their complementary subjects and matching frames make them especially attractive displayed together, whether arranged vertically or side by side.
