Tjok Dessauvage is one of the most important Belgian ceramic artists of his generation. His work often begins with the archetypal vessel and bowl form, which he removes from its original function and transforms into a vehicle for signs, structures, and abstract imagery. The surface becomes a plane in its own right, where material, graphic order, and color interact.
The present bowl sculpture from 2000 demonstrates this approach particularly clearly. The flat, almost closed form rests on a small, round base, drawing the eye to its upper surface. A central, black-framed depression forms a calming counterpoint to the densely incised decoration that extends across the light surface and the body of the bowl.
In the lower section of the front, the graphic elements coalesce into a clear geometric composition. Black triangular and segmented areas are accentuated by a partially gilded zone, creating a precise contrast to the light, finely textured base.
This very combination of archaic vessel form and deliberately composed surface is characteristic of Dessauvage's work. The bowl remains recognizable as an original form, but it is no longer merely a utilitarian object. It becomes a sculptural support for images, its effect arising from the interplay of form, incised design, black surface, and gold.
For collectors as well as for discerning interiors, the appeal lies precisely in this dual role: an independent ceramic work that is situated within art history and at the same time functions as a precise, calm accent in the room. This piece has an attribution mark,
