The drawer fronts have reeded mouldings with flushed recessed handles complemented with the original brass locks and keys. The unusual size of the chest and iron work carry handles suggests it was not meant to be used within a carry case and notably wrapped with oil cloth and lashed with a robe for transportation. The chest with faux oak decoration to the pine is very unusual and it is noted that the original owner was possibly not meant to travel overseas hence the simpler construction of the chest. The chest has a pine panelled back with a later dedication added to the back commemorating the loss of a loved one. In wonderful condition and retaining the original working locks and keys makes this a special and interesting piece of campaign furniture. Reimagined it would make a wonderful dual bedside cabinet or chest for a more diminutive space. English, circa 1880
