Wide and low, this brass urli rests on a flared, stepped foot, with a thick rolled rim and fine turned rings around its body. The metal has deepened to soft gold and olive, with green traces along the rim, and the inside carries the marks of use, a copper-red center and silvery, scoured patches where hands and years have rubbed it. The urli is a form from Kerala and South India, traditionally cast in brass or bronze and used in homes and temples to hold water, flowers and lamps. This one is a vintage original, heavy in the hand and unpolished.
At 11 inches across and 4 inches tall, it holds floating flowers or candles on a dining table, sits on a console as a catch-all, or anchors a coffee table tray. The mellow brass warms up plaster walls, dark wood and stone.
