The flattened, broadly rounded torso is crowned by a high, undulating dorsal fin infused with fine polychrome threading, imparting a lively impression of underwater motion from both sides. Crafted using traditional Venetian furnace methods, the sculpture incorporates individually applied hot-worked glass elements over the blown central gather. Heavy clear glass forms the ribbed pectoral fins, the steadying ventral fins beneath, and the broad, sweeping tail feathered with bright green trailing. The expressive face is detailed with an applied puckered mouth and raised button-style disc eyes. Originating from the island of Murano in Venice and produced probably in the 1960s, the figure reflects the colourful animalier themes that flourished during the Italian mid-century modern era. It stands securely unsupported on its two lower fins, allowing daylight to illuminate the varied thickness of the glass, highlighting minute internal air bubbles and organic tooling impressions characteristic of freehand furnace manufacture. Measuring 24 cm in length from the mouth to the tail tip and 19 cm in height to the crest of the dorsal fin, the piece possesses substantial weight and presence. Its combination of dense colour bands and sparkling clear projections makes it a striking focal point for a mantelpiece, open console, or illuminated display cabinet. See less
