The monochrome scene depicts the timber-pillared smithy beside a winding country lane shaded by mature trees, executed in delicate tonal washes reminiscent of period photographic prints and sepia watercolours. The pictorial plaque is set within an engraved border of fine scrolling foliate work that borders the outer edge of the lid. On the reverse, the exterior is decorated with horizontal engine-turned banding filled with a minute geometric pattern, bordered to match the front face. The entire casing retains an even, warm gilt tone. Opening on an integrated five-joint hinge, the interior reveals a frosted gilded finish stamped 'Gold Cased' beside the inner rim. A woven fabric retaining strap is anchored across the upper section of the inner well to secure contents in position, while a low-profile spring thumbpiece operates the closure along the front edge. Measuring approximately 87 mm by 71 mm, the case dates to around 1900. Topographical English village views are unusual subjects on personal cases of this period, which more frequently carried sporting or equestrian subjects. The enamel work is signed with a subtle initial 'M' in the lower section. See less
