Measuring 123 cm wide by 94 cm high, the composition is executed in mixed media on paper laid on sturdy backing board and set into a deep black wooden tray frame. Viewed from a distance, the piece reads as a crisp photographic likeness of the actress in an elegant strapless gown and tiara; on closer inspection, the surface dissolves into a meticulous grid of miniature graphic symbols and tonal variations. The artwork reflects Holdsworth’s distinctive multi-stage technique, which bridges computerised graphic manipulation and traditional studio painting. The process starts with detailed digital editing to isolate contrast, colour separation, and fine facial contours. Holdsworth then breaks the image into mosaic-like pixels of graduated dimensions to introduce depth, superimposing a recurring star icon that pays homage to classic cinema. Using a digital tablet to establish colour swatches, the artist subsequently works directly onto the mounted surface by hand, applying inks and airbrushed pigments over dozens of hours to establish rich tonal modelling before applying successive protective varnish coats. The piece is signed by the artist in black ink to the lower right corner. The pale neutral background balances the warm, nuanced flesh tones of the figure, while the subtle tonal shifts in Hepburn's dark hair and jewellery provide dramatic focal contrast. On the reverse, an applied inventory label records the artist's name, title, and medium. About the Artist: Nick Holdsworth is a British contemporary artist recognised for his distinctive pop art mosaics. In 1998, he founded the cult graphic fashion label Purple Om, later known as Random, gaining international acclaim across major retailers including Harrods, Harvey Nichols, and Colette in Paris. Bringing his background in graphic design into fine art, he developed a dedicated studio practice focusing on celebrated cultural icons, urban architectural landscapes, and pop culture portraiture.
