The Bard is rendered with his traditional high receding forehead, sweeping locks of wavy hair, and a carefully defined moustache and pointed beard. The sculpture is mounted directly atop an integral waisted plinth of square architectural form, decorated on the front fascia with the name 'SHAKESPEARE' in raised block lettering highlighted in white against the dark ground. The decorative scheme relies on flowing, translucent monochrome and tinted glazes. Pale ivory and buff tones cover the head and facial features, where brown pigment picks out the contours of the eyes, brow, and beard. These lighter areas flow downward into a honey-gold glaze across the collar, before deepening into rich shades of auburn, chestnut, and dark treacle brown across the gathered folds of the garment. The plinth is finished in a uniform mirror-gloss black, providing a sober, classical foundation beneath the warm coloration of the bust. Manufactured in Woodville, Derbyshire, the bust is attributed to around 1884. The reverse of the back drape bears the impressed circular rising sun trademark of Bretby, stamped above the word 'ENGLAND'. The hollow slip-cast construction is typical of Victorian art earthenware, with the interior showing clean, vitrified ceramic and the base resting evenly on its glazed rim. Very fine age-consistent glaze crazing is visible across the pale face and forehead under close inspection, characteristic of high-gloss earthenware from this era. Measuring 26 cm in height, the bust is designed to suit a desk, bookshelf, or collector's cabinet. The modelling reflects the enduring Victorian appetite for literary commemorations, combining historical portraiture with the fluid glaze effects developed by the Bretby pottery under founders Henry Tooth and Christopher Dresser.
