Hello! I am Stefanie the face behind Beyond Timbuktu. I offer authentic cultural objects and textiles gathered through decades of my own work and travel across Africa, the Middle East, and historic world heritage sites, including - yes - Timbuktu, which I visited several times in the late 00s while working in the Sahel region of West Africa.
My collection reflects the time I spent living and working in remote regions including West and Central Africa, the Sahel, Afghanistan, and East Africa, as well as extended travel to historic cities and archaeological sites worldwide. I also include pieces from my own family's rich and traveled history, from the iconic jazz and heritage festival, a New Orleans tradition since 1969 - where my stepfather was a longtime local jazz enthusiast - to art and sculpture from my sister-in-law's famed "Images of the North" gallery - a San Francisco featured location for Inuit artist through the 70s, 80s and 90s.
I offer my pieces individually, with careful attention to origin, material, and condition. Provenance and history are shared honestly - items were personally acquired in their original locations across the decades, from Timbuktu, to Thailand and beyond.
